EACC Lay Ministers of Health: Cloggie, Phyllis, Charlene, Nate and Madge

Dear Friends:

What a glorious couple of days it has been!  The United Church of Christ applauds the courage vote by the House on Sunday and the subsequent signing of the bill into law by President Barack Obama!  View the press release:

Although Rev. Linda Jaramillo and I had the honor and privilege to be among the many persons invited to the Health Care Bill Signing by the White House this morning, I would like to say “thank you” from the bottom my heart to the many local pastors and congregations; conference, association and national staff for all the hard work each and everyone of you did, to make health care reform a reality. This was a collective and collaborative effort by everyone of you who made the many phone calls, participated in marches and rallies, wrote letters to your editors, visited your legislative official, took legislative action on the Just Peace Action Network, held health care informational meetings at your churches, conducted prayer vigils and candlelight ceremonies, offered a word of encouragement and support and read endless emails (smile).
The victory belongs to all of us! Thank you!  Thank you!  Thank you!

For the first time in our history, lawmakers have made a national legislative commitment to health care.
32 million uninsured persons will gain access to insurance over the coming years.
The gap in Medicare prescription drug coverage (the “doughnut hole”) for senior adults will be closed.
Insurance companies will be prohibited from denying insurance to persons with pre-existing conditions.
Young adults will be permitted to remain on parents’ insurance plans until age 26.

“Germs - The Importance of Good Handwashing”, was the theme for the annual Healthy Connectors, Saturday Fun program. Students (17) and adults(5) gathered on Mar. 13th. to watch a animated video on the proper method of handwashing, then a special lotion was applied to a couple of volunteers’ hands, and with the help of an ultra violet light, students could see areas missed if hands were not washed long enough.  A light and healthy lunch of finger foods was served and each student received a resource bag and fresh fruit to take home.

EACC’s own Judy Sieck, a retired nurse with 34 years of experience, ably facilitated the discussion and program. Judy holds a Master’s Degree in Community Health.
